The Learning Center at West Virginia Wesleyan College

West Virginia Wesleyan College is strongly committed to providing excellent support to students with documented learning disabilities such as dyslexia and attention deficit disorder. Our comprehensive program provides a solid foundational service delivered by master level professionals and two fee-based, optional programs assisting with the transition to college level academics.

The Mentor Advantage Program provides an innovative, individualized support developed from research on the transition and persistence of postsecondary students with learning disabilities and from self-regulated learning theory. It is designed to create a bridge to academic regulation in the college environment. The program is composed of four elements: organizational mentoring, strategic content tutoring, weekly small group discusion, and evening check-in.

In addition, Wesleyan offers an individualized clinical learning program that focuses on the improvement of reading and math skills and language comprehension. Although the program is not an official site certified and endorsed by Lindamood-Bell ®, students work with instructors who have been trained in Lindamood-Bell ® Learning Techniques. This program has been in existence at Wesleyan since 1992. Consistent application with this approach will improve skills required for accurate decoding, quick word recognition, and comprehension for the increased volume of information facing today’s college student. Test scores and improved academic performance have validated a record of success with our students.
