A College Transition Program Move Expands Student Opportunities

from CIP Bloomington

Find College Programs for Students with Learning Differences across the United States now

The goal of a college transition program is to provide academic, social, and vocational training support for students with learning differences who are attending college. But what happens when a program outgrows its original home? Sometimes change can be threatening but in this case the challenge of change has been a good thing, for students and for the program, because it expands students' academic, vocational, and social opportunities in many good ways.

This month, CIP Bloomington will move on to a newly designed space in Bloomington, Indiana CIP (The College Internship Program) is a national transition program for teens and young adults with autism and other learning differences.

The large offices and classroom / meeting spaces are located in the center of downtown Bloomington. They are designed to create an open floor plan that will work well for student learning and socializing, as well as a technology lab and art studio.

CIP's new building is close to features students will want most: just steps from the B-Line Trail bike path, very close to Indiana University, near business site where students will be working at internships, including banks, restaurants, parks, and stores. There are 40 local businesses which partner with CIP to offer students internships and paid employment.

CIP students have great educational and work alternatives. They can study at Ivy Tech Community College or Indiana University and pursue internships and jobs all over Bloomington. Students taking classes at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer their credits to Indiana University and complete a four-year degree.

Newly remodeled two-bedroom apartments above the Center will provide the dorms for CIP students. Bloomington's atmosphere of Hoosier hospitality provides students with a safe and welcoming small-town environment. Part of CIP's strength is its ability to teach, encourage and strengthen life and social skills in real-life settings that prepare them for independent living.

CIP is a national program, founded in 1984 by Dr. Michael McManmon. It operates 5 centers throughout the US, plus two-week summer programs on college campuses throughout the US. 2019 marks CIP's 35th Anniversary and decades of experience working with young adults with learning differences.

"We are excited about our move to this new location in the same great community we've been a part of for over ten years," commented Jacob Steinmetz, Program Director at CIP Bloomington. "We look forward to commemorating CIP's 35th Anniversary this Fall as we continue to help create great outcomes for our students."
