A brief overview of our approach and focus:
We will follow the approach of Stanley Greenspan, M.D. He is a well known clinical professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences, and Pediatrics at George Washington University Medical School. He is a founder and former president of Zero to Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families. Dr. Greenspan states:
Developmental Milestones:
- Cognitive
- Social
- Emotional
- Language
- Motor Skills
- Sense of Self
These six basic steps form a developmental ladder; each layers new abilities onto those of prior stages. They are called the six milestones because each one marks a major turning point in the life of a child.ˇ¨
Sensory Integration:
The sensory integrative approach is guided by the childˇ¦s motivation in selection of the activities. It allows the child to be actively involved, and explore activities that provide sensory experiences most beneficial to him/her. The child will become more mature and efficient at organizing sensory information.
Music:
Music Therapy uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages. Music therapy can improve the quality of life for children and adults. It is especially therapeutic for children with disabilities or illnesses. Music therapy interventions will be designed to:
- Promote wellness
- Manage stress
- Alleviate pain
- Promote social interaction
- Express feelings
- Enhance memory
- Improve communication
- Promote physical rehabilitation
